Surgery

Overview

Surgical Advancement has harnessed the imagination of a number of preeminent surgeons in the field to carry out basic, clinical and translational research with the aim of improving outcomes for all surgical patients. Our team works closely with Surgical Advancement physicians and surgical residents to move their research ideas from protocol into the full implementation of the research study until presentation/publication. Our current studies include translational research projects, a feasibility and usability study with a novel newly-approved robotic platform from Transenterix as well as other studies which explore a variety of surgical interventions, patterns of care, disease trends and risk factors all with the aim of improving patient outcomes while decreasing patient costs. The Surgical Advancement research enterprise fosters these groundbreaking studies by providing support and resources to promote the compliant and efficient conduct of research.

Our Capabilities

Surgeons have the capability to perform live surgical broadcasts, video conferencing, tele-monitoring and web based education. There is complete a/v integration throughout the facility with advanced media services including production, capture and broadcast available in these spaces.

Prototyping brings together physicians, researchers, engineers and other health care professionals in a creative way to bring their ideas for development of medical equipment to life. Teams use the latest technology to help inventors develop, test and refine their latest ideas to improve clinical techniques and outcomes.

The Innovations in Surgery Series is a remarkable opportunity to learn from industry experts in laparoscopic, robotic and minimally invasive surgery.  This series is broadcast live to our surgeons and residents on the first Friday of each month.

Each year ISA strives to represent AdventHealth on the local, national, and international levels.  We achieve this by solving clinical needs, being at the forefront of surgical technology, sharing best practices across the globe and connecting with the local school communities.  ISA has a passion for promoting STEM education and encouraging the future of healthcare providers and engineers.

The Observership Program at AH’s Institute for Surgical Advancement offers surgeons/physicians from around the world the opportunity to observe our surgical techniques and procedures while shadowing physicians, residents and nurses in their daily activities.

Annually we provide educational and training events which aim to create conversations surrounding medicine and surgery.  Attendees have an opportunity to participate in didactic sessions in the CREATION Conference Center and a hands-on wet lab in the Nicholson Center.

About the Facility

The Brainstorming Room

Our conference facilities have the capability to do live surgical broadcasts, video conferencing, tele-monitoring and web based education. There is complete a/v integration throughout the facility with advanced media services including production, capture and broadcast available in these spaces. An area is also allocated for breakout sessions, to ensure further collaboration and networking.

The Prototype Lab

The Surgical Advancement Prototype Lab is a creative space for physicians, researchers, engineers and other health care professionals to bring their ideas for development of medical equipment to life. The members of the ISA Prototype Lab team serve as assistants in making those medical device concepts a reality. They use the latest technology, such as 3D printers, to help inventors develop, test and refine their latest ideas to improve clinical techniques and outcomes.
